As the virus wreaked havoc, people became anxious while waiting at home. Faced with the spread of the epidemic and a nervous mind, the Party Committee of the School of Public Affairs & Law actively responded. In addition to earnestly implementing the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's series of important directives and relevant decisions and arrangements of the Central Committee, and unifying the ideological understanding of all Party members during the epidemic, the Party Committee of the School of Public Affairs & Law issued a reading Proposal on March 18, 2020 to carry out anti-epidemic reading and sharing activities, encouraging everyone to take advantage of the rare opportunity to calm down, think actively and understand life, so as to calm down and fight against the epidemic, enhance communication in online discussions, and make a contribution to the fight against the epidemic.

This reading sharing activity lasted for a month, which was carried out in the form of unified recommended books of the college, personal reading and online communication among branches. Among the first recommended books areGuns, Germs, and Steel(By Jared Diamond),Connected By Illness: Governance for Health and Global Politics(By Garmark Zach and Tanya Chaffe),The Best Goodbyes: What You Need to Know About Aging and Dying(By Artur Gervinder),To Live(Yu Hua), andNotes on Retirement(Shi Tiesheng). These five books, covering literature, medicine, sociology and other fields, shine a light on aspects that people usually don't look at carefully.

In the course of reading and thinking, people had gained a deeper understanding of the broad impact of the epidemic and the importance of combining professional knowledge to fight against the epidemic and participate in governance. For example, Yang Shan, a teacher in the Department of Law, believed that "it is very important to establish a global disease control system, including detection system, emergency response system, cross-border health prevention cooperation and assistance, etc. For the study of the law profession, the study of cooperation in international law related to disease is also an important direction." Dean Wang Yongjie also mentioned that "the sudden outbreak and rapid spread of COVID-19 has caused a major public health emergency in China, posing unprecedented challenges to the emergency decision-making and localized management mode of governments at all levels, and also brought the ultimate test of epidemic prevention and control. In the meantime, I went back toGuns, Germs, and Steel: The Fate of Human Society.I still learned a lot from reading through the book in combination with reality."

Make candle for light, read for the truth. General Secretary Xi Jinping has stressed the importance of learning to cultivate one's mind, cultivate one's morality and enhance one's ability. "Learning should be regarded as a pursuit, a hobby and a healthy lifestyle, and we should be happy to learn." To put what you have learned into practice, to accumulate knowledge and technology during the epidemic, and to make continuous efforts to improve the early warning and prediction mechanism for epidemic prevention and control, and to improve the ability and level of systematic countermeasures, is to live up to the mission of scientific researchers!
